UPDATE FROM THE HARTLEY HIGHWAY ACTION GROUP - The RTA are to decide if the Newnes Plateau will be included in the "Study Area" for the new Highway before the end of the year. They also hope to have some corridor options on the table soon after a decision is made.We are told the decision will be made based on Transport Modeling. That is, predictions of use calculated from traffic statistics and movements.
Meanwhile we now have confirmed and registered sightings of the Spotted Tail Quoll (also known as Native Cat - Tiger Quoll) in the Hartley Vale village, the middle of the current study area. This rarely seen native will require the RTA to closely consider the habitat destruction caused by a new road. We have found other special natives, including the Long Nosed Bandicoot. Further investigations will hopefully reveal the believed extinct Eastern Quoll of which there have been unconfirmed sightings.
It is not too late to write to Federal and State politicians and protest about the wholesale destruction this new road will create through this special and important valley. If you need details and don’t have the list in our earlier HHAG newsletter another will be out soon or ring me on 6355 2332. David Peters, Chair HHAG.
